The Power Of One Film Essay

In the Hang him up scene, the director uses a close-up shot of Jaapie Botha. An example of this film aspect can be seen when the scene switches to Jaapie Botha pulling his hand out of his pocket with a large slingshot. The director used this film aspect to show how much power Jaapie Botha had and that he was about to kill Pk’s chicken. This helps us understand that Jaapie Botha would do anything to ruin little PK’s life, starting off with the only thing he loved, which was his beloved chicken. This reminds me of a scene in the movie when it shows a close up of Pk’s face after he pushes Jaapie Botha into a natsi flagstick.

In the Hang him up scene, the director uses a low angle shot of the rope they use to hang P.K up. For example, we see this aspect when one of the boys throw the rope, over the railing connected to the roof. The director did this to show how high Pk would be hung up and that it was right next to his dead chicken. This makes the audience feel in rage and terrified to see what’s coming up next. This aspect can be compared to when Sergeant Borman stands assertively as he has his baton in his hand and Geel Piet is in the background.

In the Hang him up scene, the director uses a long shot of all the students in the room. This is demonstrated when all the students have hung PK up and Jaapie Botha is doing the Hitler salute in the background. This was done to catch a glimpse of everything that was happening and the surroundings of PK and what kind of environment he’s in. This helps us understand that PK is in an unhealthy environment and is treated poorly by Jaapie Botha and the other students. This reminds me of the scene where Sergeant Borman made Geel Piet eat the poo of his shoe because it shows inequality and unfairness.
